Criminology Research

Programs that conduct research which focuses on crime as a sociopathological phenomenon, the behavior of criminals and the social institutions that have evolved to respond to crime. Research may focus on the theory of crime; the psychological and social bases of criminal behavior; social value systems and the theory of punishment; criminal law and criminal justice systems; penology; rehabilitation and recidivism; studies of specific types of crime; social attitudes and policy; and applications to specific issues in law enforcement administration and policy.

Education Research

Programs that conduct research which advances knowledge about education and promotes the dissemination and practical application of research results (including information about exemplary and promising programs) to help educators, policy makers and communities improve schools and help all students attain their full potential. Education research addresses a wide variety of topics including early childhood development and learning, student learning and achievement, cultural and linguistic diversity and second language learning, postsecondary improvement, faculty performance, adult learning, and education policy.

Historical Research

Programs that conduct research which analyzes and interprets the past using a wide variety of sources which may include government and institutional records, newspapers and other periodicals, photographs, interviews, films and unpublished documents such as personal diaries and letters. Historians usually specialize in a country or region, a particular period, or a particular field such as social, intellectual, cultural, political or diplomatic history. Some may collect detailed information about individuals while others help study and preserve archival materials, artifacts and historic buildings and sites.

Social and Cultural Studies

Programs that conduct research which focuses on the history, sociology, politics, culture and economics of a particular geographic region or a particular subset of the population which shares common characteristics, traits and customs.
