Activities of Daily Living Assessment

Programs that evaluate an individual's capacity for self-care and his or her ability to function independently in the context of everyday living and which, where necessary, may recommend rehabilitative services (e.g., independent living skills instruction), supportive services (e.g., attendant care, personal care or home health care), or an alternative residential setting (e.g., an assisted living center or nursing facility). Activities of daily living include bathing, eating, dressing, mobility, transferring from bed to chair and using the toilet. Most assessments also include instrumental activities of daily living such as using the telephone, taking medication, money management, housework, meal preparation, laundry and grocery shopping. Evaluation services are generally provided for individuals who have physical and/or mental limitations or for people whose age may constitute a temporary (children) or developing (elderly) limitation.

Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology

Programs that offer the specialty in which all modalities of radiant energy are used for the detection of abnormalities throughout the body, often following the ingestion or injection of a radioactive or radiopaque substance that functions as a contrast medium. This includes but is not limited to imaging techniques and methodologies utilizing radiation emitted by x-ray tubes, radionuclides, thermagraphic devices, ultrasonic devices and radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by atoms.

Disease/Disability Specific Screening/Diagnosis

Programs that offer screening and/or in-depth diagnostic procedures that establish the presence of a targeted disease, disability, condition or disorder and/or which provide a logical foundation for ongoing treatment.

Elder Abuse Medical Evaluations

Programs that utilize licensed medical professionals to conduct physical examinations and psycho-social assessments of older and dependent adults to determine whether there are physical injuries or other relevant findings that may indicate elder/dependent adult abuse. Physical signs include bruises, fractures, cuts, repeated injuries, untreated bedsores, unclean clothing, poor hygiene and unusual weight loss. Changes in the older person's behavior and emotional state such as agitation, withdrawal, anxiety or apathy may also suggest a problem. Evidence gathered during the evaluation process is carefully documented and may be used to respond to mandatory reporting laws, inform the provision of adult protective services and/or to support legal proceedings in an elder abuse case.

General Laboratory Tests

Programs that perform a laboratory analysis of body fluids and tissue to determine the presence of irregularities or to identify unknown substances submitted for analysis.

Genetic Testing and Screening

Programs that conduct tests of an individual's genetic material (DNA, RNA, chromosomes, proteins, and certain metabolites) to establish whether there are risk factors associated with particular diseases or disabilities, to help identify or exonerate individuals involved in criminal matters based on DNA evidence, or to establish paternity or maternity for legal or immigration purposes. Genetic testing generally involves individuals suspected of criminal activity or being at high risk for a disease or disability whereas genetic screening is conducted with a broader population about which risk factors are unknown.

Pediatric Evaluation

Programs that specialize in providing health screening and diagnostic services for children from birth to young adulthood.

Physical Examinations

An evaluation of the body and its functions using inspection, palpation (feeling with the hands), percussion (tapping with the fingers), and auscultation (listening). A complete health assessment also involves gathering information about a person's medical history and lifestyle, doing laboratory tests and screening for disease. Included are general physical examinations which occur annually and physicals that are conducted for a specific purpose, e.g., employment, sports participation.

Prenatal Evaluation

Programs that utilize any of a variety of techniques to detect fetal abnormalities prior to the birth of the child. Results of the tests can be used to manage the remaining weeks of pregnancy, plan for possible complications in the birth process, plan for care of the newborn infant, decide whether to continue the pregnancy and/or determine whether fetal treatment is required.

Specialized Medical Tests

Programs that use specialized instruments to examine the body or measure the extent to which specific symptoms have manifested themselves.
